This self-paced online course is intended to provide information for system of care communities about how to develop and implement telebehavioral health programs and services. The course provides an overview of the benefits of telebehavioral health, discusses the critical components and issues related to effective implementation of telebehavioral services, and discusses practical approaches and issues when implementing telebehavioral health programs. Users have an opportunity to assess the readiness of their agencies/organization to implement telebehavioral health. Continuing medical education and continuing education credits are available by completing this on-line course.
This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, social workers, marriage counselors, and family therapists involved in the management of patients with behavioral health concerns (mental health or substance abuse).
Statement of Need/Program Overview
Behavioral health providers are limited in rural and remote communities. Connecting patients to needed services – assessments, counseling, medication management, etc. – via technology can assist in filling a workforce and access gap for these underserved communities and populations. This training includes an overview of the current status of the field of telebehavioral health, the trends likely to emerge, and some practical considerations to think about when planning a technology enhanced solution to providing mental health and substance abuse services. The training also highlights important resources to utilize in the initiation of any telebehavioral health solution including the current guidelines for providing services via videoconferencing.
After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:
- Define telebehavioral health.
- Identify the practical considerations when implementing a telebehavioral health solution.
- Develop strategies to implement telebehavioral health services that could benefit children, youth, families, providers and the larger system of care.
- Articulate what technology options are available including how they function in the provision of behavioral health services
- Provide appropriate care and counsel for patients and their families.
